The Puppies turned 3 weeks old today!  As you have read from the last (very long) post, they had a busy week and next week looks to be just as busy.  But before I get to what’s coming for this week, let me finish up with last week.  Yesterday was the puppies’ first introduction to water.  I filled the kiddie pool with about an inch of water and put the puppies (groups of 5) in. I took video of the whole thing, but for some reason the files aren’t working 🙁 which means I have no idea who did what.  I can say that all of them initially sat down and drank some of the water.  In both groups there were a couple who crawled out of the kiddie pool and a couple who just sat there.  In all no one was real traumatized so I think it was a success.  I may do it again tomorrow and try to get that video and so you can see them.

Today I put some bird wings out in the yard and let them ALL loose.  Unfortunately, I put the puppies downwind from the wings so they didn’t catch the scent before they all started barking and howling.  One puppy did find a wing and spent a few minutes chewing on it.

Also, as of yesterday most of the puppies have TEETH poking through so Mama is going to start getting more and more distant from them.  I’m still having to separate them for feeding durning the day because 10 is just too many when they are 3+lbs.  Speaking of weight… their week three weigh-in shows blue boy still leading the pack with 3.11 lbs while orange rounds out the bottom at 3.3 lbs.  It looks like most of them gained about 14oz over the last week.

Tomorrow I will start them on non-Mama food and start to ease them way from her already sore boobies.  It should prove to be quite messy.  They may get dropped into the pool after their feeding time so they can clean themselves up.  For the rest of the week, they might start spending more time outside .  They seem to like the grass and Mama seems to prefer to nurse out there so we shall see.  I’ll also start some other training exercises such as: follow me, watch me, where’s the hot dog.

Oh!  I hope to be setting up a “puppy cam” next week.  I ordered a new wireless camera that can be viewed via internet or iphone.  I’m not sure yet whether it will allow multiple viewers or not, but if it does, you can check in on the puppies any time!  I’ll be sure to let you know if/when it’s up and running.

I will also be looking to hold their first live bird introduction in week five as well as a trip to the lake or watering hole so keep an eye out on the calendar for upcoming dates.
