Puppies First Bird
Today was a BIG day in the puppies’ world, they got to meet a live bird nose to beak! They may still be a little young to understand what’s going on, but this kind of early exposure opens them up to the scent and excitement of live birds. The Shane and Mays families came to help out and watch the new experience.
The plan was to wrangle all the puppies and put the bird down in the middle of them and let them do whatever comes naturally. A couple of the puppies were immediately attracted to the bird and tried to grab it, others just scattered. We repeated the process several times and several puppies became more and more interested.
It didn’t take long for the excitement to tire them out and they started dropping like flies. I eventually had a pile of them on my lap and next to me. Once it was clear the puppies were done with birds, I allowed Roxie out of the house and had one of the kids hide the bird and let Roxie find it and retrieve it a few times. She did GREAT on her retrieve, which is something we’ve been working on this last year. I still have two birds left so hope to get them out a couple more times this week.
Of course, I was able to get video of the event as well as some photos. I edited the video a little. It’s about 10 minutes long.
For those who have heard me talk about the other Weim breeder, Meredith Wadsworth of Southpaw Weimaraners who had her young pups out on birds, here is one of those videos. These puppies are 6 weeks old. I hope to have the same type of video of my puppies to show you soon!
